Small Claims Procedure Launched in Mbarara.

During the launch of Small Claims Procedure, an\r\nalternative method of dealing with civil proceedings in Mbarara District on\r\nMarch 14, 2014, some people whose cases have dragged on or been allegedly\r\nmismanaged recounted what they experienced in trying to get justice. The\r\ncomplaints ranged from extortions, delays in handling cases, bias, delays in\r\naccessing judgments, records of proceedings and collusion between lawyers and\r\nmagistrates.

The\r\nHon. Principal Judge Hon. Justice Dr.Yorokamu Bamwine, who was the chief guest,\r\nsaid it has taken them long to build public confidence in the Judiciary, but\r\nadded that most of the delayed cases had been handled.

\r\n\r\n

He,\r\nhowever, acknowledged there were still some court clerks and lawyers who\r\nmanipulate litigants to deny or delay them appearances before judges and\r\nadjourn cases to extort money. Hon. Justice Dr. Bamwine cautioned the public\r\nagainst bribing court employees.

\r\n\r\n

Hon.\r\nJustice Dr. Bamwine said small claims procedure would enable administration of\r\njustice on small claims to be expedited cheaply and support the vulnerable and\r\nthe poor since it does not require services from lawyers.
